Ten minutes at Ditton Quarry, Maidstone at 13:00 produced a new bird for me on this site - Little Egret, flying over and heading east towards the Quarrywood Industrial estate, Aylesford. Four Lesser Redpolls were performing acrobatics in the Alders in the SW corner with a flock of Goldfinches; they seemed more flighty than yesterday. Chaffinches, Greenfinches and Bullfinches were all seen completing the 'finch set' for the day. A couple of Goldcrest moved restlessly through the undergrowth.
A report of wildlife sightings from the western edge of Maidstone, Kent. I note anything of interest in the vicinity of my home in Barming and from walks into work at the East Malling Research Station along the edge of Barming Woods and down to Ditton. Occasionally, when time allows, I get out to Ditton Quarry, a rich habitat hemmed in by residential and industrial developments on one side, but with open countryside on the other.

Adam ,
Nice one with the Hawfinch - again , you realise he'll start ranting - again now .
Thanks Greenie - I'm hoping it'll stay around for a few more people to appreciate! It's a tad frustrating that it's probably in my back garden at some time during the day, but because of the short days I'm having to leave for work just as it gets light and return when it's dark!!! Roll on the weekend!
Great to hear about the Hawfinch Adam, and well done with the Little Egret.
