Monday 5th January

Unexpectedly heavy snow this morning curtailed my ride into work, and a wintery walk at lunchtime around Ditton Court Quarry failed to turn up much at all. It started to snow as I walked back, but a mixed flock of winter thrushes (lots of Redwings for those who are missing them elsewhere) and finches flew up ahead of me as I entered the East Malling Research site from Kiln Barn Lane. They landed in the trees outside the old deserted Ditton Laboratory and I manged to pick out a Brambling amongst them. The light was really awful so I only managed a couple of equally awful record shots, sorry! It's a species that's strangely eluded me on site for the last 2 years! I'm sure a more careful scan of the orchards will turn up a few more.

Hi Adam.
Always nice to see a Brambling, especially on a crisp winters day.
