A report of wildlife sightings from the western edge of Maidstone, Kent. I note anything of interest in the vicinity of my home in Barming and from walks into work at the East Malling Research Station along the edge of Barming Woods and down to Ditton. Occasionally, when time allows, I get out to Ditton Quarry, a rich habitat hemmed in by residential and industrial developments on one side, but with open countryside on the other.

Friday 5th December
A lovely clear day so I made a lunchtime visit to Halling to check if I couldn't get lucky and relocate the Waxwing. No luck, but good to get off patch and check out a new area. The embankment on the A228 and cotoneasters around the fire station were made for a Waxwing influx! Steve Nunn had suggested checking out Halling Cemetery but I ran out of time - how I wish I'd gone as I Ken (http://disabledbirderofhalling.blogspot.com/) found a Firecrest there...well done Ken!

Hi Adam.
It's a pity your trip to Halling was in vane.I too was hoping it was still about. There's a lot of good feeding area's between here and the lakes, so there could still be Waxwing about somewhere.Have a good weekend.
Hi again Adam.
As you come from Snodland you stay on the A228. As you pass Snodland there's a garage on the left by roundabout,go straight on. I think there's another roundabout, go straight on. Then there is another new roundabout that dowsn't go anywhere except straight on, then directly after there is a turning on the right for Halling. Follow it all the way through until you see The New Inn pub on the left,( it use to be the 5 bells) and a shop opposite on the corner. Then take the 2nd turning on the left, Cemetery Rd. It's a short, narrow rd but you can park and turn nr the cemetery. Just go over the rail bridge and park up. Don't worry the road look as like it carries on around to the left and over the bridge but it is only used once in a blue moon when somebody turns up to feed the horse in the field over the other side.Or you could park on the High St, and just walk up.I hope that makes sense.
Also thanks for putting a link to my blog on yours. Is there any chance you could email me your email address? I will try to send a street map.
