A report of wildlife sightings from the western edge of Maidstone, Kent. I note anything of interest in the vicinity of my home in Barming and from walks into work at the East Malling Research Station along the edge of Barming Woods and down to Ditton. Occasionally, when time allows, I get out to Ditton Quarry, a rich habitat hemmed in by residential and industrial developments on one side, but with open countryside on the other.

Sunday 6th December
Looking after the kids today, but couldn't resist the sunshine and the thought of 4x Shorelark only 25 minutes away! All wrapped up, and picking up James Bushnell up from West Malling, we headed off to Cliffe Pools. The wind was a lot stronger up at Cliffe than Barming, and the Shorelark (we only saw one) was huddled up, giving us occasional glimpses of it's well-marked face. Walking around the fort a couple of Kingfishers flew in front of, their electric backs just glinting as they caught the light. On Alpha Pool we managed to pick out the bulky shape of a juv Great Northern Diver riding the waves!
